## Short answer

- To connect Gemini to a workout log, open Connectors, click + Custom and add the app's MCP server. Povver's is mcp.povver.ai/mcp. Click Next and sign in, and Gemini calls Povver when it needs your log.
- The + Custom button showed on a free Gemini account. Other guides say custom connectors need Google AI Ultra, so check it shows on yours.
- In the example, Gemini lists the last five workouts, then names the one stalling lift, the barbell row, from six to eight weeks of trend.

To connect Gemini to a workout log, add the app's MCP server as a custom connector under Connected Apps. For Povver, a strength training app, open Connectors in Gemini, click + Custom, choose Connect to an MCP server and enter https://mcp.povver.ai/mcp. Click Next and sign in with your Povver account. Gemini calls Povver when a question needs your log. You need the iPhone app and a trial or subscription ([pricing](/#pricing)), and the 14-day trial includes it. The + Custom button was there on a free Gemini account. Povver's server lets Gemini read your sets, trends and volume and change your routines and plan.

## How do I connect Gemini to my workout log with a custom MCP server?

1. Install Povver on your iPhone, create an account and start the 14-day free trial.
2. Log your sessions in the app. Gemini works from what you've logged, so a few weeks of sessions give it trends to look at.
3. In Gemini on the web, open Connectors, the tab next to Discover and Skills. The page it opens is titled Connected Apps. You can't add a custom connector from Gemini's phone app, so do this step on a computer.
4. Click + Custom and choose Connect to an MCP server.
5. Paste the server URL: `https://mcp.povver.ai/mcp` and click Next.
6. Gemini asks you to link your Google Account and the custom Povver account. It warns that Google can run Povver's tools and read and manage your Povver data. Continue.
7. Sign in with your Povver account on the page that opens, then click Allow access.
8. Ask a question about your training. Gemini calls Povver when it needs your log, and you can name it with @Povver, as in the screenshot below.

*The Connect to an MCP server dialog in Gemini: paste the URL and click Next.*

Gemini's dialog says a custom connected app "hasn't been reviewed by Google". Povver's sign-in page then asks "Allow Google to access your Povver data?" and says Google will be able to read and modify your routines, templates and workout data. Each time Gemini reads or writes, Povver checks that your trial or subscription is still active.

## What if I don't see Custom under Connectors?

Guides for Gemini disagree. Harvv's says custom connectors need Google AI Ultra on a personal Google account and don't show on Free or Pro. Regrid's lists a personal Google account (Workspace and Education accounts aren't supported) and Keep Activity switched on. FreeWheel's says the Gemini app can't add a custom MCP server at all. A free Gemini account showed + Custom under Connectors and connected to Povver's server. Google changes this page often, so look for the button on your own account.

If it isn't there, the same server works in [Claude](/blog/claude-training-log), in [ChatGPT](/blog/chatgpt-training-log) and in Gemini CLI, which takes the server's URL in a settings file (Regrid's guide has the entry).

## What does Gemini say when it reads my training?

Both examples use a demo account on an upper/lower split, the same one as in [the Claude example](/blog/claude-training-log) and [the ChatGPT example](/blog/chatgpt-training-log). Both screens are Gemini on a free account, and both examples are reads.

### "List my last five workouts"

*Gemini's answer to the first prompt, with @Povver at the start: workouts newest first, each with its exercises.*

Gemini listed the workouts newest first with each session's exercises: Upper A on 16 October 2026 (bench press, bent-over row, overhead press, lat pulldown, triceps pushdown and a bicep curl) and Lower B on 15 October 2026 (back squat, split squat, leg extension, seated leg curl, calf raise and a cable crunch). Gemini's list gives names, dates and exercises. ChatGPT's also gives durations, set counts and volume.

### "Which of my lifts are stalling?"

![Gemini naming Bent Over Row (Barbell) as the only stalling lift over the last 6 to 8 weeks, with bench press, squat and Romanian deadlift progressing](https://povver.ai/assets/blog/gemini-stalling-slate-1440.webp)
*Gemini names the stalling lift: the barbell bent-over row, the only one in six to eight weeks of trend.*

"Based on the trend over the last 6–8 weeks, only one of your lifts is currently stalling," Gemini answered: the barbell bent-over row. It said the other lifts are either progressing, like the bench press, squat and Romanian deadlift, or holding steady, and that the standing calf raise doesn't have enough estimated 1RM data to calculate a trend yet.

It tells you which lift but not by how much. ChatGPT's answer to the same question has the row down 14% over 8 weeks. Povver has that trend, so ask Gemini how your bent-over row's estimated 1RM has moved week by week.

## What should I ask Gemini about my training?

Start with the question you would ask a coach:

- Which of my lifts are stalling, and what does the log say about why?
- Am I doing enough hard sets for my back and chest each week?
- How has my bench press estimated 1RM moved over the last eight weeks?
- Swap the barbell row for a chest-supported row in both upper-body templates.
- My shoulder is sore. Rework next week so I'm not pressing through it.
- How has my bent-over row's estimated 1RM moved week by week?

You don't need to name Povver in the question: Gemini uses it when a question needs your log.

## Why does Povver work out the numbers before Gemini reads them?

If you give a model your raw sets, it has to do the maths before it can tell you anything, and twelve weeks of sets from one real account come to about 60,000 tokens. Povver works out each lift's trend and weekly hard sets per muscle first, so the strength climb that answers "am I getting stronger?" is about 1,000 tokens. The numbers are the same every time, and Gemini only has to read them and say what to change. [The Claude page](/blog/claude-training-log) has the token counts, the prices and a test across three Claude models.

## What can Gemini read and change in Povver?

Gemini can read every set you've logged, which lifts are progressing, holding or stalling, estimated 1RM week by week, and hard sets per muscle against your target range. It can save routines, templates, your plan and finished workouts, note an injury, and log sets in a workout you've started. A workout starts in the Povver app. The full list is at [mcp.povver.ai](https://mcp.povver.ai/).

## What if Gemini doesn't use Povver or shows an error?

Type @Povver in the message and Gemini will use it. If the answer says your session expired, add the connector again under Connectors → + Custom and sign in. If it says Povver Premium is required, your trial or subscription has ended, and you can renew it in the Povver app.

## Connecting Gemini to a workout log: common questions

### How do I connect Gemini to my workout log?

Add your logging app's MCP server in Gemini as a custom connector. For Povver, open Connectors, click + Custom, choose Connect to an MCP server, enter https://mcp.povver.ai/mcp, click Next and sign in with your Povver account. Then ask your question: Gemini calls Povver when it needs your log. Gemini can read your sets, trends and volume and change your routines and plan.

### Does Povver work with Gemini on a free account?

Yes. On a free Gemini account with a demo log, Povver's server connected, listed the last five workouts and named the barbell row as the stalling lift. Some guides say custom connectors need Google AI Ultra, and Gemini's menus and plan limits change.

### What is Povver's MCP server URL for Gemini?

https://mcp.povver.ai/mcp. Paste it into the Connect to an MCP server dialog and sign in with your Povver account. No API key is needed.

### Can Gemini change my Povver workouts and routines?

Yes. Through Povver's server Gemini can write routines, templates, your training plan and finished workouts, and log sets or finish a workout you started in the app. One tool deletes, and it is marked destructive.

### Why is there no Custom button in my Gemini?

Regrid's guide names a personal Google account as a requirement, lists Workspace and Education accounts as unsupported and says to keep Activity switched on. Harvv's guide says you need Google AI Ultra. If the button isn't on your account, the same Povver server works in Claude, ChatGPT and Gemini CLI.

### Do I need the top Gemini model to read my training log?

Povver works out the trends before Gemini sees them, so the model only has to read them and explain what to change. In one test on Claude, Haiku, Sonnet and Opus gave the same answer, and [the Claude page](/blog/claude-training-log) has the numbers.

### Can I add Povver from the Gemini phone app?

Not from the phone app: Gemini doesn't let you add a custom connector there, so set Povver up on a computer.

### What is MCP?

MCP, the Model Context Protocol, is an open standard that lets an AI assistant read and change data in another app. The app runs a server, and assistants such as Gemini connect to it by URL. Povver does not use your workout data to train AI models.

### Does connecting Gemini cost extra?

No extra cost beyond Povver. The connector needs a Povver trial or subscription, checked on every request, and the 14-day free trial includes it. Google decides which Gemini accounts can add a custom connector.
